Erotic literature is genre that uses eroticism in written form, to arouse, amuse or instruct the reader about sexual practices. Erotic literature was not seen as a major problem before the invention of printing, that brought with it both a greater market and increasing restrictions - including censorship and legal restraints. Because of this, much of the production of this type of material became clandestine and many authors have remained in anonymity. Literary critic August Nemo has selected the following short stories for this book: Daphnis and Chloe by Longus; Idylll by Guy de Maupassant; Beatrice Palmato by Edith Wharton; Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch; The Lustful Turk by Anonymous; Sub-Umbra by Anonymous; How He Lost His Whiskers: An Episode in the Life of Steve Broad by Anonymous.
Longus was the author of an ancient Greek novel or romance, Daphnis and Chloe. Nothing is known of his life; it is assumed that he lived on the isle of Lesbos (setting for Daphnis and Chloe) during the 2nd century AD.
Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was born in Lemberg, Austrian Galicia, on January 27, 1836. He studied jurisprudence at Prague and Graz, and in 1857 became a teacher at the latter university. He published several historical works, but soon gave up his academic career to devote himself wholly to literature.
Guy de Maupassant is famous for his short stories, which paint a fascinating picture of French life in the 19th century. He was prolific, publishing over 300 short stories and six novels, but died at a young age after ongoing struggles with both physical and mental health.
Edith Wharton (January 24, 1862 – August 11, 1937) was an American novelist, short story writer, playwright, and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper class New York "aristocracy" to realistically portray the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1921. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1996.
